West Allis-West Milwaukee Activity & Fitness Center
The West Allis–West Milwaukee Activity & Fitness Center was designed to bring together fitness, education, and community services within a modernized, highly functional environment. Key features include an indoor walking track, a full-size gymnasium, dance and fitness studios, a preschool learning center, and flexible multipurpose spaces supported by an attached kitchen.
The facility also establishes a permanent home for the Recreation and Community Services Department. The surrounding site was thoughtfully reimagined to provide a welcoming, park-like setting with improved accessibility and convenient parking—creating an inclusive space that encourages year-round use and community interaction.
Scope of Work:
The project includes both the renovation of the existing structure and the construction of a new addition. Interior spaces were reconfigured and upgraded to support a wide range of recreational, educational, and administrative functions. The facility integrates athletic spaces, classrooms, offices, and large gathering areas, all designed to support flexibility and ease of use. Site improvements include enhanced access points, parking accommodations, and landscaped outdoor areas that complement the building’s community-focused purpose.
Historical Significance:
The project thoughtfully honors the site’s legacy by incorporating materials and storytelling elements tied to its origins. Brick from the original structure was carefully salvaged and repurposed to construct a retaining wall that commemorates the Works Progress Administration projects initiated under Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression.
Sustainability & Impact:
The project emphasizes both environmental responsibility and long-term community value. Adaptive reuse strategies, including the incorporation of existing materials, reduce waste while reinforcing the building’s connection to its history. Completed in the summer of 2020, the Activity & Fitness Center stands as a lasting investment in community health and connectivity—providing a dynamic, accessible space that supports recreation and education.
