Hotel Verdant

A vacant downtown Racine landmark was revitalized as Hotel Verdant, an 80-room boutique hotel. Originally built in 1916 as Zahn’s Department Store and partially repurposed during a stalled 1990s Children’s Museum project, the 1924 building now combines historic charm with modern amenities. Hotel Verdant exemplifies adaptive reuse, modern luxury, and sustainable design, redefining boutique hospitality in downtown Racine.

Scope of Work: The project included the full interior and exterior renovation of the building, creating a 200-person ballroom, flexible meeting spaces, a fitness center, a full-service restaurant, an elegant lobby, and a rooftop garden bar with views of Lake Michigan.

Sustainable & Historic Design: Preserved the building’s historic character while integrating modern, environmentally conscious systems, including geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels, wind turbines, and rooftop plantings for stormwater management.
