Bright Horizon for Local Support School

Local Recovery High School Gets New Home Through Donations From CG Schmidt and Community Partners

After nearly 15 years of temporary facilities, Horizon High School – Dane County’s only recovery High School, has finally found a permanent home. Made possible in part through donations and volunteer efforts from CG Schmidt and several area trade organizations, the High School will celebrate their grand opening this week. First founded in 2006, Horizon High School is a “recovery high school,” whose mission is to provide emotional, social, and academic growth for students who want to learn in an alcohol-free and drug-free environment. Horizon provides year-round, hands-on education for 9th-12th grade students, serving approximately 10-15 students and maintaining a staff-to-student ratio of 5:1. In their 15-year history, Horizon has helped educate more than 150 students.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, Horizon High School – like many schools nationwide, had to reevaluate their space needs and classroom layout to ensure continued student safety. Horizon High School, which had been housed in a cramped one-room school, needed to expand their footprint in order to bring students safely back into the classroom.

Recognizing the important role that Horizon High School plays for Dane County’s at-risk students, CG Schmidt made the decision to support the school through financial, material, and in-kind donations to further enable the school to remodel water-damaged suites in downtown Madison. This newly remodeled space at 5003 University Avenue allows for the school to bring students into the crucial in-person learning environment. The new space is much more expansive with four restrooms, individual staff offices, and a kitchen area. The expanded footprint will also allow Horizon to serve more students, with the ability to segment students into smaller groups for more individualized learning.

We love working with Horizon High School, they are an amazing organization that has a huge impact on their students. They deserve nothing less than an exceptional space to learn in.

Thanks to support from CG Schmidt and several area firms, including Burse Surveying and Engineering, Plunkett Raysich Architects, Next Electric, Lerdahl, NAMI Plumbing, The Rockwell Group, and Hughes Flooring, which have almost entirely covered the cost of renovation, Horizon High School is poised to tentatively open later this Spring pending city approval.

We have been amazed at the outpouring of support from partners and subcontractors donating their time and labor. With their help we will provide essential services like plumbing, carpentry, drywall, flooring, painting, interior design, and more.”
