WMH PARKING STRUCTURE WINS CONCRETE AWARD
Madison, Wis. – A newly designed parking structure for the Waukesha Memorial Hospital, where CG Schmidt led the construction management and self-performed concrete work, earned a 2009 Decorative Concrete Design Award.
The awards are a part of a prestigious program showcasing best uses of ready-mixed concrete in Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP). The Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association (WRMCA), GeoTest, Inc. Sika Corporation, and the Wisconsin Chapter of ACI International cosponsored the bi-annual awards, now entering its 30th year. A distinguished panel of Wisconsin/UP educators and construction professionals determined award winners.
The Excellence Imagined themed Concrete Design Award Ceremony took place on Friday, March 5, 2010 at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells.
The Waukesha Memorial Hospital Parking Structure consisted of 13,262 cubic yards of concrete. The most challenging portion of the project was the placement of the structural post tensioned decks which consisted of approximately 8500 cubic yards.
The mixes for the project ranged from 3000 PSI up to 6000 PSI with air. The project was the ultimate challenge for all of the companies involved to make the project a success. The project started on March 6, 2009 and was completed on October 27, 2009.
With the extremely aggressive schedule for the project, CG Schmidt and the ready mix supplier had several pre-pour meetings to construct a game plant to ensure that the pour schedules could be maintained throughout the project.
The structural post tensioned decks were the most challenging portion of the project. CG Schmidt maintained two deck pours per week at an average of 400 cubic yards per pour. The mix was a 6000 PSI AE with high range, water reduced and corrosion inhibitor at 3 gallons per cubic yard. The mix was designed specifically to achieve 3000 PSI in 3 days in order to meet the client’s schedule to stress the PT cables. However, the majority of the decks were stressed as early as 36 to 48 hours because the concrete reached the required strengths ahead of the strength curve.
Other mixes used on the project included a 4000 PSI for the walls and exterior paving, 5000 PSI with air for columns and walls, and a 2000 PSI lean mix for soil stabilization.
In order to meet the owner’s aggressive schedule for completion, concrete was the only building solution to make this happen. With the commitment of all of the team members, the project was completed on time and the owner has an aesthetically pleasing concrete structure which will provide a service to the hospital for many years.
